Here is one of Claude Galle's rarest models, that of the apartment of Emperor Napoleon I in Fontainebleau.
Already not easy to find in pairs, I offer you an exceptional Torch Quartet.
In chiseled and matt and shiny gilded bronze with a fluted quiver barrel, roughened in the upper part and decorated with gadroons and stylized leaves in the lower part. The circular base decorated with palmettes and elongated gadroons.
The palm-shaped binet separated from the barrel by two rings, reminiscent of the arrows of a quiver.
Claude Galle delivers to the Garde-meuble, according to the memorandum of September 3, 1808, for the Salon des Princes at the Palace of Compiègne, 2 pairs of identical candlesticks. (The Hour, the Fire, the Light. Marie-France Dupuy-Baylet, page 61)
An identical pair was delivered in 1810 to the first salon of the Emperor's small apartment at the Château de Fontainebleau, thus described : " two torches, round feet, rods fluted decorated with palmettes at the bottom of 0.30 c ” (arch. Nat., 0² 654). Musée du château national de Fontainebleau, Clocks and furnishing bronzes entered under the First Empire, Samoyault, p. 182, RMN Paris 1989.
Although often attributed to Pierre-PhilippeThomire (because many torches with a decoration organized in different ways, resuming what was in a quiver, were delivered by the Master bronzier), this model is indeed from Claude Galle.
(Dumonthier, Bronzes d'illumination..., pl. 36, n° 10, RMN Paris 1989.).
(Marie-France Dupuy-Baylet: time, fire, light, page 61).
