Oil on canvas depicting Alexander standing before Darius III, after having defeated him at the battle of Issos on November 1, 333 BC.
Darius is depicted without his royal attributes: mantle, bow and shield (which according to legend he abandoned on the battlefield while fleeing).
This is an original work, representing the artist's vision of Darius' shame and dishonor after his cowardly desertion, and he allegedly abandoned his family as well. His mother, his wife Stateira and their children would have been captured by Alexander (scene represented by the many paintings: The family of Darius III at the feet of Alexander).
The absence of signature being very common in the 17th century among great artists, this work is to be strongly compared to the work of Filippo Abbiati.
The setting is refined, rare (tortoise shell, outline of the cartridges inlaid with mother-of-pearl) and in complete harmony with the spirit of the work.
17th century period.
