Beautiful suite of four Etruscan Directoire period chairs in mahogany and mahogany veneer.
The hind feet sabers and forelegs in circled spindles. Headbands sculpted with a solar flower framed by a diamond, creation of Georges Jacob, which was taken over by his sons (Jacob frères rue Meslée). We also find these same patterns carved on the belt directly above the front feet.
Directly inspired by discoveries during the excavations of Herculaneum, this model of chair became very "trendy" under the Directory.
Georges Jacob and Jean Baptiste Boulard were the first to market them, each with their own specificities. The front legs of Boulard models are mainly baluster or fluted.
The top and bottom double straps of the front legs ending in a spinning top, as in the suite proposed, are one of the characteristics of certain Georges Jacob models. All identical banded chairs (smooth or carved) bear the stamp or are attributed to the patriarch of the Jacob dynasty.
A stenciled inventory mark, partially erased, is present under the belt of one of them, C 11 32, probably from the Château de Compiègne.
Very good used condition, formerly reinforced seats, good stability.
Some old restorations.
Pretty two-tone green seat upholstery, incorporating the symbol of solar flowers.
A model as rare as it is elegant.
Directoire period, late 18th century.
As with most of my art objects and furniture, I am very careful to be able to offer them to you at a very low expert estimate value.
