Rare and beautiful support console from the Consulate period circa 1800, to compare with the work of Jean Baptiste Demay. (1759 - March 14, 1848) - Carpenter-cabinetmaker. Paris Master on February 4, 1784. He worked for thirty years in the rue de Cléry. His mark appears on the pretty flying chairs, decorated with the figure of Marie-Antoinette, which are in the Petit-Trianon.
From the start of his career, he obtained orders for the Queen's furniture. We know of many works bearing the same imprint, among others a graceful armchair owned by the Museum of Decorative Arts and two hot air balloon chairs exhibited at the Carnavalet museum. After the Revolution, the master used a new stamp which printed his name and address on two lines.
The console is one of the most characteristic pieces of furniture in interiors at the beginning of the 19th century. It largely replaces the chest of drawers and takes over all the rooms of the house (except the bedroom). This new trend explains in particular the diversity of models.
Like the vast majority of furniture from this period, our console is made of mahogany and mahogany veneer. It is part of the consoles with human figures in sheath. A model close to ours was delivered to the Palace of Fontainebleau in 1804 (for the salon of Prince Joseph).
Here, the figures are in patinated carved wood and show busts of caryatids "in the antique", surmounting a sheath itself terminated by human feet (also in patinated carved wood).
It has a beautiful turquoise blue marble top and rests on a rectangular plinth plinth.
This console table is very elegant thanks to its size and the finesse of the sculpted heads and feet, as well as that of the bronze appliques on the belt.
