In terms of sculpture and elegance, this small sofa gives us a glimpse of the quintessence of cabinetmaking in seats from the Louis XVI period.
In its faded original gilding, giving it a beautiful patina, this sofa is stamped by the greatest Master cabinetmaker-sculptor, with Georges Jacob, from the last part of the 18th century: Jean-Baptiste Claude SÉNÉ.
Great richness of sculpture, present on the whole of the sofa. Rows of pearls, oval friezes, flowers and leaves.
Straight backrest with detached columns, with a small gadrooned vase sculpted at the ends.
Superb detached armrests in fluted balusters ending in windings.
The four tapered and fluted legs.

Beautiful silk and velvet upholstery, worn on part of the seat and armrests.
Perfect stability, without any reinforcement.

Very good condition.

Like Georges Jacob, Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené is considered the greatest French carpenter of the reign of Louis XVI.
Known for his very large production as well as for the longevity of his fame, eldest son of the carpenter Claude I Sené, Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené stands out unequivocally as the most famous of the Parisian carpenters of his lineage. From rue de Cléry to the “Gros Chapelet” sign where he works, his talent quickly arouses great interest. Sené devoted the first years of his career to the service of a private clientele to which he delivered Louis XVI seats with pure, neat, refined, well-proportioned, but classic lines . From 1785 to 1791, he appears with Jean-Baptiste Boulard; among the regular suppliers of the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne. He then benefited from orders for the castles of Saint-Cloud, Versailles, Fontainebleau or even Compiègne from the King, the Queen, but also for several members of the royal family, for whom he produced seats of the highest and finest quality.
