Very nice pair of gilded and patinated bronze toilet candlesticks also called " ragots " candlesticks.
Indeed, these torches were placed in the rooms reserved for washing or dressing, the size of the latter facilitating their handling and their position in these intimate rooms. 
Imagining them used in these places of private life makes us appreciate their discreet charm. 

This rare model of torches is attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843).
They are in chiseled bronze with a brown and golden patina. The top of the flared shaft, the base, like half of the shaft, have an applied decoration of stylized bat wings, characteristic of torches " ragots_cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b- 136bad5cf58d_” by PP Thomire. 
The choice of this decorative element is possibly to be compared with  the darkness of the small intimate living rooms that were the bathrooms and wardrobes where very few windows were provided .

In 1810, Thomire-Duterme et Cie delivered a series of five pairs, with bat wing motifs, for the Palace of Fontainebleau, one of which was intended for the wardrobe of the Emperor's small apartment on the ground floor, while the other four went to occupy the bathrooms.
